The LackRack

An 18U server rack made from two stacked IKEA LACK tables.

The LACK table legs are almost exactly 19” apart on the inside. Almost ideal for a rack. I’ve got some Adam Hall rack strips bolted to 3D printed parts that fit between the table leg and the top surface. I didn’t like the versions where they were screwed into the legs directly.

I have hollowed out the legs and reinforced them with solid wood, IKEA ships the legs mostly hollow.

The build

  • Two IKEA LACK side tables, stacked
  • Adam Hall rack strips down each leg
  • 3D-printed brackets to mount the Dell Micros
  • Custom 1U shelves — two Micros side by side per shelf
  • Power cables routed down the back rails with velcro
  • Open-sided on all four faces — passive ambient cooling, no extra fans

More to come later.
